Deltas Dazzling Costumes
New Years’ Eve is just weeks away and already my family and I have been invited to not one, not two, not three but yes four New Year Eve parties. One is a bit far away but three of them are close by so I think we can at least make an appearance at the other three. Wow this day and night are going to be full on! All three parties are themed and all required costumes which is easy because I’ll just stop in at Delta’s Dazzling Costumes and get costumes for me (I’m the wife and mummy), my husband, and two children, a young boy and girl. Party number one, a beach party with a tropical theme. I have been on the Delta’s website and have seen some great Hawaiian themed costumes and decorations. We can all wear a coloured Lei and I can also get the grass skirt and coconut bra I saw. For Hubby a straw hat, Hawaiian shirt and some funky novelty sipper cups and we are set. Party number two is a high rise sophisticated 1920’s masquerade ball and I’ve seen plenty of masks that would look great on us all. There’s so many to choose from, gorgeous jeweled, feathered colourful masks for me and dark and sexy masculine masks for him. The kids have a huge range to choose from too, there are animal masks and superhero masks, all colours and lots of different designs. When it comes to 1920’s costumes Delta’s have the biggest range I have ever seen. Perfect dresses in plenty of colours, feather boas, pearl necklaces, cigarette holders and long flapper gloves… this will be my favourite. I have picked out a pinstriped zoot suit for my husband and a matching one for my son complete with matching gangster hats and white spats. There’s even a cute little flapper dress to fit my daughter. That’s two parties down and just one more to dress for. A block party in my neighborhood and it’s a relaxed but super fun, super cool, superhero party! My son definitely wants to go as Batman… or superman.. or Ironman. He can’t make up his mind but my daughter can, her only requirement is that she has a tutu, that’s easy I’ve seen batgirl and spider girl costumes for her like this. Maybe Hulk for my husband and how about Catwoman for me! Either way I know Delta’s Dazzling Costumes have so many superhero costumes we can definitely find what we need there. So we are all ready, we have costumes for Men, Ladies, boys and girls for three different themed parties and we can get it all at once at Delta’s Dazzling Costumes. I can go into the store at Southport and get what I need or I might just use the convenience of their website and order it all online and have it sent right to my door. I am so glad I found a store that has everything I need now the only thing left is to decide which party to be at when the clock strikes 12!

When you think of Oktoberfest what do you think of? Beer, Food and traditional German attire, drunk Germans slapping their knees? That’s what most of us think of but truth is it’s a lot more than that. It’s also a great family event, it is actually the biggest fair in the world running day and night over 16 days and drawing a crowd of more than 6 million people. I was lucky enough to experience this huge event and be part of the Oktoberfest celebrations.
Entering through the gates along with the other thousands of people was so exciting just picturing what would be on offer when we made it through. As we spilled through and spread out we didn’t know what to do first or where to go. A quick chat and decided fair fun first, before we started our beer sampling as rides after a few drinks could get a bit messy. So we started out just walking around, taking it all in, the people, the costumes, the food, the smells, the noise and the looks of enjoyment on every ones faces.
Pennant Flags, tablecloths, and hanging decorations in traditional Oktoberfest colours of blue and white hung from tents, carts and sideshows as well as cut outs of Beer Steins and Pretzels - like there wasn’t enough of the real thing everywhere you turned. German Flags, badges and streamers also hung in yellow black and red as a happy reminder of the country we were in.
There were families with young kids, they were all dressed up too, old couples young couples, groups of men and women all dressed up and looking very much a part of the scene. I felt such a well fitted part of it also and was glad I’d made the effort to get my friends and I costumes for the event. As well as my Fetching Fraulein we had an Alpine Girl, Barvarian Guy, Beer Garden Girl, Fritz Go Lightly and of course we all have that one mate that wears the Miss German Breast Funny Costume.
We went on a few rides and played a few sideshow games but were all really keen to get to the main reason we were here at Oktoberfest, the Beer Tents! There are 14 to choose from but we knew which one we were headed to, the noisiest and most well-known for fun, the most famous – world famous.. Hofbrau Festhalle!
When we entered the Hofbrau tent it was like we just walked into an over the top movie set but this was real and this was how they did it. We were greeted by everyone we passed, they were all so friendly and having a ball. The waitresses walked past us carrying up to 12 beers to tables up and down the hall, but I don’t mean a schooner or even a pint these were 1 Litre steins, and with a full chest popping out the top of their dress, just like you see in the pictures. There was music playing loudly but it wasn’t just traditional German style music it was pasts hits that everyone knows and when I say they all sang along I mean they ALL sang along, everyone in that tent was singing out the chorus including the bar staff and waitresses. There wasn’t a sad or lonely person in sight. I don’t know how we did it, but among the thousands in that tent we were lucky enough to be walking past a large table of people who were on their way to the next beer hall and the huge bearded German gestured for us to take their table. Perfect! We had a table for our whole group and were happy to settle in for a while.
We ordered some beers. “What will you have?” the waitress asked. We all looked a little blank, we didn’t know the names of the beers. “I’ll just get you the Hofbrau special”, she said and took off towards the bar. We had barely settled into our seats and picked up the menu when 6 huge full Beer Steins were slammed down on the table in front of us. Woah this was huge. This would take me a little while to get through. We ordered some meal; Bratwurst sausage and sauerkraut for me and the rest of my group had about the same.
With our bellies full we got stuck into the beer and experienced the most upbeat atmosphere with everything exactly how you would imagine it in your head. From the waitresses, to the food, the beer, the yelling, the big hairy German men and yes even the knee slapping and loud locals.
Our day turned into night as we became friends with the tables around us. We ate giant pretzels, sang to the songs from the live band and swayed with our arms around strangers with our beer steins (of our 4th and 5th beers) in the air spilling back and forth raised in cheer before we drank. We were regulars in the crowd, locals and just knowing this was only day one of the 16 day event was just the tip of the fun we had to come over the new couple of weeks while we were in Germany. Maybe tomorrow I’d wear my Heidi Hottie outfit, eat Schweinshaxe (Pork Hock) and try one of the other 13 beer tents. Or maybe we’d come back to the one we know and loved.. where everybody knows your name. Prost!
